THE DOCTORS and nurses who treat and support people with cancer were among staff at the Alexandra Hospital honoured for their work.

Olympic gold medal winner Zac Purchase presented 21 staff and their teams who work within Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust at a recent ceremony.

The awards were based on more than 150 nominations by the public and patients and winners from the Alex included the oncology team which was recognised for their care, compassion and focus towards their patients. They were particularly praised for their phenomenal drive and determination which saw the chemotherapy Garden Suite sustain an excellent service during a recent refurbishment.

Fay Lanham, lead Oncology nurse, said: "We all work very hard together, it's an all-round team effort. It’s fantastic to be recognised."

Other awards went to volunteers Sandra and Andy Silver for their dedication and assistance on Ward 14 while the switchboard operators at the Woodrow Drive hospital won non-clinical team of the year for always being helpful, polite and keen to solve a query rather than simply handing it on or avoiding issues.

Trust chairman Harry Turner said he was proud of the achievements of all staff.

"It’s been a challenging year for anyone who works in the NHS, and it is so important we take time out to pay tribute to our staff who work so hard to provide the best possible experience, treatment and care for our patients."

Afterwards Mr Purchase tweeted: "Some fantastic awards to some highly deserving people!"
