A YOUNG BMX rider is hoping residents will dig deep and send her across the world to next year's world championships.

Libby Smith is already ranked 15th in the world for her age category but needs to raise £6,000 to attend the 2013 event in New Zealand, having saved £600 of her pocket money towards the fund already.

The 11-year-old from Greenlands has already won support from ward councillor Rebecca Blake, who has featured Libby on her community Christmas card which will be sent out across the borough in a bid to attract support.

Her dad Scott Smith told the Standard the St Bede's pupil had 'fallen in love' with BMXing after trying out the sport when the track in Redditch was built two years ago.

Last year she attended the World Championships and was looking likely to place much higher but eventually came 15th after crashing in the semi-finals. She is also on the Midlands Talent Team, despite riders usually only being selected after they reach their 13th birthday and has won the Midlands Championship for the last two years.

"I am definitely really proud of her. I have got really involved at the BMX track and am on the committee, Rebecca has been helping us out a lot and she approached me about the card as she knew we were trying to raise the money," he said.

"It's a great idea and it's nice to know there is somebody out there who cares. I hope people will get behind us."

Coun Blake said when she met Libby at the Olympic Big Screen event she knew she wanted to help her fund-raise to achieve her dream.

"This is my first community Christmas card, which will be sent out far and wide across the town. By promoting Libby's successes and determination I hope people will contact her with any donations they might like to make or fund-raising ideas," she added.

"Together let's enable Libby to represent Great Britain and Redditch in the World Championships next year. In the year that great Britain hosted the Olympics, there is no better time to get as many young people as possible involved in sport and to help them fulfil their potential."
