RISING Redditch BMX star Libby Smith will be hoping to cap a superb year by being crowned Junior Female Sports Person of the Year at the forthcoming Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Partnership Annual Sports Awards.
The St Bede's Catholic Middle School pupil, who represents Redditch Premiers BMX Club, has enjoyed numerous success stories in 2012 and has been nominated for this honour alongside Pershore Swimming Club's Tazmin Pugh and Royal Grammar School Fencing Club/Stourport Fencing Club's Danielle Lawson.
Whatever the outcome though, 2012 has been a year to savour for Libby, who has already won the local Redditch sports personality honour in March.
Her success in the 11 and 12-year-old girls events has seen her win the finals of the Mainland’s Championships at Redditch and rank first in the region for the second year running, whilst also winning the East Anglian Championships.
Libby is ranked second nationally and also represented team GB at the World BMX Championships at the NIA in Birmingham in May.
She is currently ranked 15th in the world and could have ranked even higher had it not been for an unfortunate crash in the semi-finals.
Libby, who has already qualified for the World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2013, is determined to raise the cost of her journey and expenses there.
She has herself raised over £600 towards the trip by saving birthday and Christmas money and relatives giving her pocket money.
The total cost of the trip is estimated at £6,000 and any sponsors who can help would be hugely welcomed. For more details contact Libby’s father Scott Smith at scott.smith.ktm690@hotmail.co.uk.
