THREE elderly people had to be rescued by a passing farmer when their car was swept away after they drove into a ford.

The incident happened just off the A435 in Coughton Field Lane in Coughton near Alcester about 11.30am last Friday (November 23).

After entering the fast flowing ford, the car was swept away by rising water for over 500 yards before the local farmer managed to secure the vehicle and bring it to the water's edge.

Two elderly women and a man were treated for shock and hypothermia by ambulance crews.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Two patients were airlifted and a third patient was taken by land ambulance to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch for further assessment and treatment."
