STAFF on one of the wards at the Alexandra Hospital are leading the way when it comes to preventing harm to patients.

The Department of Health has set out the four harms officials want to see tackled including blood clots, falls, pressure ulcers and urinary catheter infections. In response Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has put in place a Safe Care Team which works with staff to focus on eliminating them.

And nurses on Ward 11 at the Alex are leading the way by being hands-on and putting a series of changes in place to provide harm-free care for their patients.

As a result of their efforts the ward has reached over 130 days without a patient developing a pressure ulcer. The number of falls has also reduced from 27 in October, 2011 to nine in September this year.

Marsha Jones, ward sister on Ward 11, said: "I’ve been working on the ward for nearly a year now and the team have been amazing. Everyone is so focused on putting our patients at the centre of everything we do, which means we need to do everything we can to help eliminate patient harm."

Feedback from patients has also been positive with one feedback card recently stating: "The staff were brilliant, anything that was asked for was provided quickly. The staff were polite, respectful and attentive at all times. Well done everyone 10 out of 10."
