Further proof of rare butterfly in Redditch

FURTHER evidence has emerged a rare butterfly is establishing itself in Redditch after eggs were spotted in the borough - just a month after the first sighting of the insect.

The Standard reported in September how the Brown Hairstreak butterfly had been sighted in Astwood Bank, delighting experts who had previously only known it to be found in a small area of East Worcestershire.

Since then several people have got in touch with West Midlands Butterfly Conservation, including one woman who said she had seen the butterfly in her garden on Stoneleigh Close in Oakenshaw South. A follow-up visit led to the discovery of the eggs on Grangers Lane.

Mike Williams, Brown Hairstreak champion from West Midlands Butterfly Conservation, said: "We were delighted to record three eggs laid close to where the lady lives.

"It is a first for the town and is very exciting news. This is further evidence the Brown Hairstreak is successfully colonising Redditch and we hope with careful management of areas of blackthorn on which the butterfly lays its eggs, the butterfly will continue to thrive."

He added the eggs were only the size of a pin head and could only be seen under a magnifying glass.

"They resemble sea urchins and are a real work of art. But are very difficult to notice."

The conservation team has contacted Redditch Borough Council to inform them of their discovery and ensure the blackthorn bushes are not cut over the winter.
