Calls to halt illegal sale of cars on verges

RESIDENTS are calling for action over the illegal sale of cars parked on grass verges.

Dave Jackson, chairman of Winyates Partners and Communities Together (PACT), said residents had raised concerns about the amount of cars in the district being advertised for sale on grass verges, despite it being illegal without a street trading licence.

"There are particular hot spots on roads such as Alders Drive and Battens Drive, although it seems to be everywhere in Winyates," he said.

"Not only are people selling these cars without the correct licence and it looks unsightly, but the vehicles can block drivers' vision at junctions which is extremely dangerous for everyone."

Redditch Borough Council put forward a new policy in March, where people who left cars for sale on grass verges, main roads or drives could be fined up to £1,000 or even face enforcement action.

But Mr Jackson said more needed to be done.

"We need to stop this from happening and I urge anyone who sees a vehicle up for sale on the side of the road or parked on grass verges to take down the make of the car, the registration, the phone number of the seller then report it to the council."

Steve Jorden, head of Worcestershire Regulatory Services, said: "Under Redditch’s street trading policy if you want to sell items in a street, you need a street trading licence from the borough council and it is illegal to sell anything, including cars, on ‘prohibited’ streets, which are mostly main roads.

“When a report comes in we go out and if necessary, warn the seller to stop or risk a fine of up to £1,000. While this has always had the desired effect up until now, enforcement and fines are available to help us protect the community."
