TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'gentle giant' who collapsed and died during a cricket match against Astwood Bank Cricket Club.

Richard Beaumont was just 32 when he suffered a heart attack on the pitch during a Division One 1st XI match at Pedmore on Saturday (August 4).

Worcestershire County Cricket League said in a statement the death of Halesowen cricketer, who leaves behind a wife and young son, had caused 'tremendous sorrow and disbelief' throughout the county's clubs.

Astwood Bank first team captain Steve Adshead said the flag was flying at half mast, there would be a minute's silence and a signed shirt would be sent to Pedmore CC's memorial garden for Richard.

"Rich was a real competitor and had a fantastic spell in the game. He was the kind of bloke who really did give his all and did right to the end," he added.

"As a club we are stunned and shocked at what happened. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

"There are a lot of people whose lives he touched and in the cricketing community round the West Midlands there were a lot of people who knew and respected him."

On Astwood Bank's website, a statement said: "It is with great sadness that we have to report that our first team match against Pedmore on Saturday was abandoned due to the tragic death of opponent Richard Beaumont during the match.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends, teammates and all those connected with Pedmore Cricket Club. Our respect goes to his friends and all of the medical team who fought so hard to try and save Richard's life."

Redditch Cricket Club members, who play in the same league as Pedmore, have also come forward to add their tributes.

First team captain Luke Davis said: "We have played against Richie several times over the years. He was a good all-round cricketer and more importantly a really nice guy who all the guys got along with.

"Our club's thoughts are with his family and Pedmore Cricket Club."
