A DREAM wedding for a Church Hill woman diagnosed with terminal cancer was organised in just nine days after the community rallied around to help out.
Marlon Shirley proposed to long-term girlfriend Jackie after hearing her breast cancer, which has previously been treated with chemo and radiotherapy, had returned and this time there was nothing doctors could do.
Originally scheduled for the end of August, on July 5 the decision was taken to bring the big day forward after fears Jackie may be too unwell by then.
Little over a week later on Saturday (July 14), the pair got married at Primrose Hospice in Bromsgrove, where Jackie is currently staying.
Thanks to the generosity of individuals and businesses, the couple were given everything from a reception at Steps Bar and Bistro, an overnight stay at Southcrest Manor Hotel, a Heaphys suit, bridesmaids dresses and food for free.
Marlon's daughter Charlene told the Standard: "We have had absolutely loads of support and would especially like to thank Lynne from Steps, the Primrose Hospice and my work Fresh Insurance for organising a cake sale.
"The day itself was beautiful and it was her dream. Some people want to swim with dolphins, all Jackie wanted to do was get married.
"She lasted until about 8pm which is a long day considering how poorly she is.
"My dad just wants to say thank you to everyone, we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received and everyone has been great and made Jackie's dreams come true."
