Thief hides inside supermarket before burgling store

A BURGLAR forced his way into a town supermarket and hid inside before later stealing more than £200 worth of groceries and electrical goods.

The man prised open the doors of Aldi on Trafford Retail Park about 8.20pm on Monday, July 9 after it had closed but while some staff were still inside.

He was disturbed by either a car or someone arriving outside so left temporarily before sneaking back in and hiding.

Once all the staff had left he stole his haul, which included two 800 watt generators, a Diamond drill, four bottles of spirits and some meat, before making a getaway through the fire exit about 9.30pm. Police believe he left on foot and took the path at the back of the store towards Trescott Road.

The burglar is described as black, of medium build who was either bald or with short hair. He was wearing dark clothing including a hooded jacket or top.

The break-in was discovered after the alarm was activated and the manager returned to the store to investigate. Security at the supermarket has now been stepped up and CCTV footage is being studied by police.

PC Dan Icke said it was an unusual burglary.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was driving or walking past Aldi at about 8.20pm that evening who may have seen the thief leave for a short time before he sneaked back in."
