Countdown to torch relay

THOUSANDS are expected to line the streets as the Olympic Flame passes through Redditch and Astwood Bank in under two weeks' time.

The iconic torch, which by then will have been carried through the UK for six weeks, will enter the borough at 9.45am on Sunday, July 1. Its route will be broken into two legs - from Grove Street to Evesham Road and then from Dagtail Lane to Evesham Road, reaching Astwood Bank at 10.24am.

Council leader Bill Hartnett said: "People the world over have watched the inspiring scenes at the Olympic Torch winds its way around the country.

"Hundreds of thousands of people have already been involved in this little bit of history and we're delighted to welcome the torch relay through our borough. I know that many people will be looking closely at the route to see where it comes closest to where they live."

Residents are advised to find one spot along the route in plenty of time, staying there rather than attempting to move around to view it from more than one place.

Safety advice from Redditch Borough Council also includes staying out of the road, supervising children at all times and taking all litter home afterwards.

Two free public after-events will start in the town centre at 10am and at Astwood Bank Part at 11am, featuring face painters, activities, stalls, music, fire entertainers and circus skills.
