LUCKY children at two Redditch schools got to meet first-class cyclists as they stopped off to meet the mascots of the Halfords Tour Series road race.

With the event set to take place on Thursday (May 24), Cycle Premier-Kovert team manager Rod Freeman and cyclist Jamie Caldwell met five of the team mascots at Roman Way First School on Friday (May 11).

They were then joined by team members George Tansley, Blair Windsor and Will Bjergfelt to meet another five mascots at Birchensale Middle School.

The race, which will be broadcast on ITV4 on Friday (May 25), marks the fourth round in the Tour Series and the first time the teams have travelled to Worcestershire, with riders from Australia, the USA and New Zealand as well as the UK.

Thursday also marks the launch of Worcestershire County Council’s Choose How You Move Redditch project, a £2.8 million scheme to improve people’s health and help the environment by promoting alternative methods of travel.

Coun John Smith, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are looking to make things better for everyone in Redditch through the project and I would like to invite everyone to the free Halfords Tour Series event to sample some of the big race excitement and tension.”

The event starts at 4pm with live music, competitions and information about the three-year scheme before the cyclists are waved on their way by a Standard reader to start the race at 7pm.

Visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/choose for more information.

THERE are just hours left to enter the competition to become the person waving the starting flag at the event.

The Standard has joined forces with Halfords, the race organisers and the county council to offer the opportunity to start the race as well as receiving two VIP tickets to the event.

The runner-up will receive a signed jersey from the winning team of the Redditch leg after the event.
