REDDITCH United ended a successful 2007/2008 campaign on Saturday - finishing 13th in Blue Square North and winning the Worcestershire Senior Cup.
The Reds made considerable strides forward this season after battling against relegation for the past few years and can afford to look up the table instead of down it.
With ten players signed up for next season already, manager Gary Whild wants his charges to improve further now he has a core nucleus at his disposal.
“A lot of managers would be delighted with signing up that many players for next season and we now have a marvellous opportunity to hit the ground running,” Whild told The Standard.
“If you had said to me at the start of the season we would win the Worcestershire Senior Cup and come 13th I would have taken that.
“But we have to be realistic with where we are and with some of the clubs that are in this league.”
United’s year finished on a low with their biggest defeat of the season on Saturday when they lost 6-0 at Stalybridge Celtic.
In the last four fixtures Redditch failed to find the net and picked up just one point, conceding 13 goals in the process.
However, Whild admits the last four results, including a 5-0 defeat to Barrow, should not take away from what his players have achieved this season.
“It was a shame because of all the good things that have come out of this year. It was a disappointing end to the season,” Whild added.
“After the Worcester game things went a bit flat after we won the cup. Like it or lump it that was an important game and it was tough to motivate the players after that.
“But that is no excuse. I have still learnt a lot from this season.”
