AFTER being made redundant by the closure of MG Rover over three years ago, a Redditch man has turned a one-time hobby into a successful business.
Losing his job as a quality inspector for the former car company, which was based in Longbridge, gave Oakenshaw South resident David Sidaway the chance to set up his own business - David’s Painting/Decorating and Handyman Services.
And since setting up in August 2005, the company, has gone from strength to strength, with a wide range of clients from Redditch, Bromsgrove and the surrounding areas demanding his services.
The 46-year-old said after 21 years in the motor industry, he wanted to do something different and work for himself.
“I had always enjoyed painting and DIY, and whilst re-decorating a family member’s lounge after I lost my job, I was encouraged to set up on my own - so I did,” he said.
David, who is also a qualified locksmith, offers a range of home and garden maintenance services from painting and decorating, fitting coving, dado rails, skirting boards and laminate flooring to changing interior doors, replacing window glass, assembling flat pack furniture and staining garden fences and timber.
As well as undertaking work for private homeowners and landlords, David has also completed projects for commercial operators including pub, restaurant and guest accommodation owners.
He added: “It’s a very competitive market but customers are not just buying on price.
“They are looking for value for money – a good quality finish, clean and tidy work, and an honest and reliable service.
“And as much of my work is repeat business or referrals, I must be giving people what they want.”
