  • Sir Bobby pays a visit to Inkberrow FC

    Gary Morgan

    02 May 2008

A TRUE football legend graced the turf at Inkberrow Football Club last week to support their bid for new grass pitches.
Ex-England boss Sir Bobby Robson was guest at the club's latest fund-raising event as they try to find the £50,000 needed to support the development of the new facilities.
Chairman and club coach, John Oxley, said he was delighted to have such a prestigious guest at the event.
"We were incredibly fortunate to have such a legendary figure as Sir Bobby Robson visit us here," he said.
"We feel we are building something very special and we really couldn't have found anyone better than Sir Bobby, whose approach to the game epitomises the values that we are trying to promote throughout the club."
Around 85 guests enjoyed a three course lunch in the nearby village hall which was followed by a sparkling question and answer session with Sir Bobby.
After the lunch over 100 budding stars from the club's junior teams took part in a coaching demonstration and had their photographs taken with the former Barcelona and Newcastle United manager.
Inkberrow FC has enjoyed much growth in recent years and now boasts 12 junior teams, four senior sides, a development squad for children aged between five and six and a development squad for girls aged eight, nine and ten.
Unfortunately, it only has one full-size pitch and two mini-soccer pitches which has meant match days have become a test of careful planning, cooperation and tolerance as all games are crammed in to a tight time schedules.
It has been awarded a grant of around £100,000 from the Football Foundation for its development project, and John said the latest event went some way to raising much needed funds for its continued development.
He added the club had gained itself a reputation for the quality of its coaching and standards of behaviour.
It is also an FA Charter Standard Community Club and was awarded Regional and County Charter Standard Club of the Year in 2004 and 2007.
